PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
To program, install, calibrate, troubleshoot and repair of instrumentation and control systems that support safe, efficient, and reliable plant operations.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist the Mill Instrument by managing the maintenance and projects on the Mill DCS systems.
- Optimise and ensure uptime for all DCS equipment, including servers, network components and storage systems.
- Perform fault finding and repairs on equipment up to card level, addressing hardware and software issues.
- Resolve complex plant procedur3s using specialised techniques and equipment to reduce downtime.
- Manage and implement preventative maintenance and improvements with maintenance teams or contractors.
- Ensure engineering standards are met through inspection and commissioning of plant modifications.
- Develop, update documentation and provide on – the – job training according to Management of Change procedures.
- Research and recommend new technologies for equipment performance and oversee new installations.
- Develop safety strategies and ensure compliance with statutory requirements for a safe working environment.
- Install, calibrate, and maintain instrumentation including sensors, transmitters, flow meters, pressure gauges, control valves, and related device.
- Perform routine inspections and preventive maintenance to maximise equipment reliability and minimise downtime.
- Diagnose and repair instrumentation faults on production lines and utilities equipment.
- Assist with commissioning of new equipment and process control systems.
- Work closely with Engineering, Production, and Maintenance teams to ensure instrumentation systems support operational requirements.
- Maintain accurate documentation including calibration records, maintenance logs, and instrument databases.
- Ensure compliance with safety procedures, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives aimed at increasing equipment performance and process efficiency.
- Perform standby duties when required and provide technical assistance when called after- hours or during breakdowns.
- Ensure that Mill safety and good housekeeping systems are applied and adhered to by all in the section.
- Liaise with suppliers and section personnel to achieve departmental objectives.

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE
- Instrumentation Trade Test qualification or equivalent (NQF 6).
- Five (5) years post apprenticeship/qualification experience in a manufacturing industry, preferably Pulp and Paper manufacturing.
- Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in ABB AC 800M and AC 450 controller configuration, programming and fault finding.
- Three (3) years of experience of Fundamentals on networking.
- Strong knowledge of PLCs, SCADA systems, process control loops, and automated production machinery.
- Experience with Siemens Step 7 programming is advantageous.
