At Corruseal, sustainability has always meant looking beyond the products we make. It’s about understanding the impact we have on the world around us and taking responsibility for protecting the natural systems that support our communities. That’s why our commitment to sustainability extends beyond circular packaging solutions to projects that restore and protect the environment itself.
One of the most meaningful examples of this commitment is the restoration of Stewards Pan, an important wetland on Gauteng’s East Rand.
When Corruseal acquired land adjacent to Stewards Pan for business operations, we quickly realised the wetland was under significant environmental pressure. Years of invasive plant growth, disrupted water flows and ongoing urban development had left this once-thriving ecosystem in decline.
Rather than accepting this as the status quo, we made the decision to acquire the wetland itself, not for development, but for restoration.
Working alongside Life Green Group’s Life & Earth division, we set out to rehabilitate the landscape with a long-term vision: restoring biodiversity, improving water quality, reconnecting natural ecosystems and creating a healthier environment for future generations.
Every successful restoration begins with understanding the landscape. Detailed environmental assessments identified invasive alien vegetation, particularly Spanish Reed, as one of the biggest threats to the wetland. These invasive species had displaced indigenous plants and disrupted the natural functioning of the ecosystem.
Carefully planned restoration work followed, including the removal of invasive reeds, Black Wattle, Eucalyptus and Syringa. As these species were cleared, indigenous vegetation was given the opportunity to recover and the wetland’s natural character began to return.
Stewards Pan plays an important role within the East Rand’s network of wetlands and grasslands, providing habitat for numerous bird species and supporting regional biodiversity. Corruseal has worked closely with conservation partners, including Gauteng Conservation and Life Green Group, to explore long-term protection of the site through the Gauteng Biodiversity Stewardship Programme.
Recent bird surveys have already produced encouraging signs of recovery, including new species records and the continued return of flamingos that use the wetland as a seasonal stopover.
To celebrate this renewed ecological significance, the restored site has been named PASAR Flamingo Park – a reflection of the movement of birds through the landscape and the restored ecological connections the project aims to protect.

Environmental restoration is never truly finished. Healthy ecosystems require ongoing care, monitoring and collaboration. But every invasive plant removed, every indigenous species that returns and every bird that finds refuge at Stewards Pan is a reminder that positive change is possible when organisations commit to long-term stewardship.
